The Billie Awards honor media excellence in the portrayal of girls and women in sports and physical activity. The Billies were held on April 15, 2008 at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hill, Calif. This event gathered celebrities from film, television and professional athletics, including Billie Jean King, as well as feature a special performance by Sir Elton John.
Starting in 2004, the Women's Sports Foundation launched a program called GoGirlGo! GoGirlGo! supports parents and girl-serving organizations who want to join the Foundation in the GoGirlGo! initiative to get one million inactive girls to participate in regular physical activity and keep another one million currently active girls ages 8-18 from dropping out of physical activity. If we do nothing to increase physical activity levels, one in three youth born in the year 2000 will become a Type II diabetic. Girls are a greater risk than boys because they don't get the same support to play sports - either encouragement or funding.
The Women’s Sports Foundation is an educational nonprofit (501(c)(3) charity) organization founded in 1974 by tennis legend Billie Jean King so that girls following in her footsteps would not have to face the barriers she faced playing sports.
