About Pennie Dutro Lujan and Fairaview Farm

In 1999 Pennie and her Husband, Freddie Lujan, bought a rundown five-acre farm on Youngquist Road in Sequim. When this farm, in the foothills of the Olympic Mountains in Washington, was originally homesteaded in the 1940’s, skills and hard work were much “a way of Life.” Guided by this pioneering spirit and a desire to preserve family farming values, it wasn’t long after Pennie and her husband purchased the farm that it became a Certified Organic farm and Grade A dairy.

Farming is in Pennie’s blood.  She was raised on her family’s 80 acre farm just a stone’s throw away from the Chambers barn. She grew up loving agriculture and has had a real interest in self sufficiency. Farming is never work in Pennie’s words it’s only play, lots and lots of play, but play.

Fairaview Farm, now produces salad greens for a number of local restaurants. One of Pennie’s major accounts is Alder Wood Bistro. The majority of her vegetables, however, go toward feeding her family. The Lujan’s are almost entirely self-sufficient, with miniature Jersey cows for milk and meat, chickens and lamb. Pennie is adamant about Fairaview Farm not being a petting zoo. Everything on the farm has a purpose.   During the growing season she puts together beautiful baskets of Certified Organic vegetables and fruit, along with cheese and eggs from her farm and offers them through a community supported agriculture share program. This program, the Sequim Locally Grown Mercantile, is easily accessible online at:   http://sequim.locallygrown.net/weblog/view/1013

The skills and love of hard work that tie Pennie to the farmers before her, continues to serve her well, as she lives a life that promotes family farming values and organic self-sufficient farming.
